Benjamin and I are getting ready for Valentine’s Day this year by making sweet gifts for each other. Well, we’re actually giving each other parts of the same gift. I baked heart-shaped sugar cookies and iced them, and my artistic other half covered them in flowers using edible paint (food coloring + water & icing.) As a bonus, we spent the whole day together shopping for props, taking breaks over coffee and chai latte at cafes, walking through the snowy streets and then hanging out in the kitchen.
For Valentine’s Day itself, we were thinking about taking an overnight trip upstate — Ben even surprised me with a reservation at a hotel overlooking the Hudson River. But all of the recent snowstorms (as well as the overall insanity that’s likely to happen on Valentine’s day here) convinced us to postpone and take a more relaxing trip later in spring. Instead, we’ll do something cozy and homey in New York, which is really quite exciting by itself – our first Valentine’s Day in NYC, not too bad!
The photos of the floral dress were taken in November, but I couldn’t resist posting them today, the patterns match the Valentine’s cookies so perfectly!
- 2 large egg whites
- 3 1/4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup sugar
- Assorted food coloring, mixed with water or icing (optional)
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon strained fresh lemon juice
Beat together softened butter and sugar in a large bowl until pale and fluffy.
Beat in egg and add flour, mixing until combined.
Form dough into a ball, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 350°F.
Roll out dough onto a well-floured surface with a well-floured rolling pin, and cut out as many cookies as possible from the dough with cutters and transfer to the baking sheets with parchment paper, arranging cookies about 1-inch apart.
Bake cookies, 1 sheet at a time, until edges are golden, 10 to 12 minutes, then transfer to racks to cool completely.
For the icing, using an electric mixer, beat powdered sugar and egg whites until thick and shiny. Add lemon juice.
If desired, divide icing into portions and add different food coloring to each to apply as flowers. Or, ice cookies with white icing and wait until the icing has completely dried, then apply food coloring mixed with water directly on top using an unused paintbrush.
В этом году мы с Беном на День Св. Валентина будем обмениваться цветочными печеньками в форме сердечек. Получается, что у нас на двоих – один и тот же набор валентинок. Но мы были ответственны каждый за свою часть: я пекла печенье и покрывала сердечки глазурью, а мой художник при помощи пищевых красок превращал их в яркие букеты.
Как бонус, мы провели целый день вместе, собирая по магазинам ингредиенты, по пути останавливаясь на кофе и пряный чай в кафе, и фотографируя белок в парке, а потом за разговорами на кухне, выпекая, вырезая и раскрашивая сердечки.
